With the new regulation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, as of July 1, cafes, restaurants, eateries, and hotels must clearly specify the animal source of the meat used in their menus. Additionally, product contents, allergen information, and alcohol or pork-derived ingredients will also be included on the menus. Administrative fines will be imposed on businesses that do not comply with the rules, and calorie information must be added to menus by December 31, 2027, at the latest.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is implementing a new practice to increase food transparency in mass consumption venues. With the regulation that will come into effect on July 1, information about the foods used in restaurants, cafes, eateries, and hotels will be detailed on menus.

THE ORIGIN OF MEAT WILL BE STATED ON MENUS

Under the new regulation, businesses will be required to clearly indicate which animal the meat used in dishes belongs to. Expressions such as "meatball" or "kebab" alone will not be sufficient on menus. According to the news in Sabah, it will be clearly stated whether the product contains beef, lamb, or poultry meat.

Additionally, menus will include information about the product's main ingredients, raw materials, allergen content, and whether it contains alcohol or pork-derived components.

CALORIE INFORMATION WILL ALSO BE ADDED

Under the regulation, the calorie count of dishes will also be displayed on menus. While a transition period is granted to businesses for this obligation, calorie information must be added to menus by December 31, 2027, at the latest.

Businesses can present the mandatory information to consumers via printed menus, chalkboards, brochures, digital screens, or QR code systems. Businesses using QR codes will be required to provide clear guidance directing customers to this system.

INSPECTIONS BEGIN ON JULY 1

With the new regulation coming into effect, food inspectors working in the provincial and district directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will start field inspections.

Businesses that fail to indicate the origin of meat on their menus or provide incomplete mandatory information will face administrative fines. To avoid any sanctions, businesses must update their menus in accordance with the new regulation by July 1.
