An important discovery for the scientific world has been made in the Kaz Mountains in Çanakkale. Scientists conducting research at Sarıkız Peak at an altitude of 1,705 meters discovered a new insect species on the plant commonly known as "Kardikeni" that had never been recorded anywhere before. The species, named "Anuromyzus acantholimonis," was determined to live only on this plant, and the discovery was published in the international scientific journal Zootaxa.

With its rich flora and endemic biodiversity, the Kaz Mountains, a focal point for scientists worldwide, have once again hosted a historic discovery.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şahin Kök, Director of the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ) Biodiversity Application and Research Center, detected a new insect species that had never been recorded before during field research he conducted at Sarıkız Hill at an altitude of 1,705 meters in the Kaz Mountains, located within the borders of the Bayramiç district of Çanakkale.

HE SAW IT ON 'KARDİKENİ'

While pests feeding on the Acantholimon ulicinum plant, known locally as 'Kardikeni' and recognized for its resistance to harsh climatic conditions at high altitudes, were being examined, the species was noticed and determined to live a life specific only to this host. The new insect species was named 'Anuromyzus acantholimonis'.

ALL CLOSELY RELATED SPECIES WERE EXAMINED IN DETAIL

In studies conducted by scientists from Georgia and Russia together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şahin Kök, all closely related species of the newly discovered insect species in the world were examined in detail, and a comprehensive morphological revision study was carried out.

The article containing the discovery of the new insect species and the morphological revision of its other close relatives was published in the journal 'Zootaxa', one of the authoritative scientific journals in the field of animal taxonomy in the world.
