The pear surgically removed from the throat of a cow that was on the verge of death in Kastamonu's Küre district will be taught to future veterinarians at Kastamonu University.

In Camili village of Küre district in Kastamonu, the pear eaten by the cow got stuck in its esophagus. The pear was able to be removed from the cow, which was about to die, with a 2-hour surgery performed in the barn environment by Veterinarian Birol Yürük. The cow was saved as a result of the successful operation. Veterinarian Yürük, who preserved the removed pear, later delivered it to Kastamonu University. The pear, delivered to Dr. Candemir Özcan, who works as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Kastamonu University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, will be taught as a lesson to future veterinarians.

A DIFFICULT OPERATION THAT COULD ENTER THE LITERATURE

Stating that this operation was one that could enter the literature, Veterinarian Birol Yürük said, 'We had a 4-year-old Simmental breed cow; she was 5.5 months pregnant. On the way back to the barn in the evening, she takes this pear, and after taking a step or two, while trying to get the apple on the branch of the apple tree, she swallows it. The pear remains in the part we call the esophagus (food pipe). Later, the animal's owner called me. He said the animal's abdomen was swollen and saliva was coming from its mouth. When I arrived at the scene, the animal looked like it was about to burst. I tried a little to remove it with a tube, but I could not get the pear down into the stomach. Then we worked with a trocar to release the gas in the rumen, and we immediately took it to surgery. It was truly a very difficult operation, especially under barn conditions; it lasted 2 hours. Having to perform it under barn conditions, anesthesia, and the animal being pregnant were each separate difficulties. Thankfully, the animal is well, and it was an emergency operation. An operation that could have resulted in death. There had not been an operation previously planned or worked on for this. It was difficult for us as well. In fact, it is an event that could also enter the literature. Such cases are rarely encountered.'

THE PEAR WILL BE A LESSON FOR STUDENTS

Dr. Candemir Özcan, a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Kastamonu University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, stated that in such situations it is very important for veterinarians in the field to be conscious and prepared, and said, 'We always help them. We consult these issues together with them. Our veterinarians achieve great things here in the field. I also thank our Veterinarian Mr. Birol, who brought this. It will be a good example for our students too. It is a truly difficult operation to perform. Because it is an operation with side effects. Performing it especially in cattle can lead to major side effects. It is possible to perform these procedures under barn conditions, with difficulties and challenges. However, that it was completed successfully and that the operation provided at least some benefit to the animal and its owners is pleasing and a good thing. I also thank you for this example. It will also be useful for our students. At least when explaining this subject, being able to explain it to them more consciously and with a concrete example in our hands will be nicer and better.'
