An American citizen, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, 24, who wanted to leave a "gift" for the tribe living completely isolated from the world on North Sentinel Island in the Andaman Islands, was arrested by Indian authorities on Monday.

According to information obtained from officials, Polyakov arrived in the region on March 26 and set off towards North Sentinel Island on the morning of March 29 with a boat he prepared. He reached the forbidden island around 10:00 AM, crossing a distance of 40 kilometers with GPS.

According to the investigation file, the suspect stayed on the island for about five minutes and during this time left a box of cola and a coconut as a "gift" for the tribe. He also collected samples from the area and recorded footage with a GoPro camera.

During Polyakov's return from the island, local fishermen noticed the situation and reported it to the police. The arrested tourist's boat, engine, and camera were confiscated.

Caroline Pearce, director of the indigenous rights organization Survival International, stated, "This person's actions are extremely dangerous. The Sentinelese tribe has no immunity to the diseases of the modern world. Simple diseases like flu or measles could wipe out the entire tribe."

Police officials noted that the suspect had previously attempted to come to the region twice and had filmed forbidden footage of another indigenous tribe in January.

North Sentinel Island has been declared a completely forbidden area by the Indian government to protect the Sentinelese tribe, which is estimated to have only about 150 members and refuses to make contact with the outside world. In 2018, American missionary John Chau was killed by tribe members when he attempted to reach the island.

The U.S. Embassy and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs have been informed about the incident. Polyakov's interrogation is ongoing.
