In Politis newspaper in the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, Panayiotis K. Mavros drew attention to Turkey's power and said, 'No solution can be imposed on an 80-million-strong Turkey.' Mavros criticized the Greek Cypriot administration's armament policy and claimed that the TRNC's observer status is a harbinger of the recognition process.
In the Politis newspaper published in the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCA), attention was drawn to Turkey's military, economic and diplomatic power, and the statement "No solution can be imposed on an 80-million-strong Turkey" was used.
"THE MILITARIZATION OF CYPRUS WOULD LEAD TO A NAGORNO-KARABAKH SCENARIO"
Remarkable statements concerning Turkey appeared in the press of the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCA). In his column titled "A Half-Century of Decline" published in Politis newspaper, Panayiotis K. Mavros stated that he was impressed by a study on Turkey's military capacity and criticized the Greek Cypriot administration's armament policy. Expressing that he did not find the policies pursued by the Greek Cypriot leadership in the face of Turkey's military power realistic, Mavros warned that the militarization of Cyprus could lead to a new Nagorno-Karabakh scenario.
Drawing attention to Turkey's economic size and international relations, Panayiotis K. Mavros assessed, "No solution can be imposed on an 80-million-strong Turkey." Stating that European countries want to get a share of Turkey's large market, the Greek Cypriot writer argued that this economic reality cannot be ignored in the Cyprus issue.
HE DREW ATTENTION TO THE RECOGNITION OF THE TRNC
Also assessing the observer status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the Organization of Turkic States, Mavros argued that this development was a harbinger of the process toward the TRNC's international recognition. Arguing that the Greek Cypriot administration had not sufficiently appreciated the importance of relations between Turkey and the Turkic states, the Greek Cypriot writer stated that current developments should be taken into account in terms of the diplomatic balances in the Cyprus issue.
"THE GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION COULD NOT DEVELOP AN EFFECTIVE POLICY"
Criticizing the policies of GCA leader Nikos Christodoulides toward militarizing Cyprus, Panayiotis K. Mavros argued that this approach carries serious risks in the face of Turkey's military capacity. Also touching on Turkey's drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, Mavros argued that Turkish drilling vessels could operate in areas that the Greek Cypriot administration describes as its own exclusive economic zone, while the Greek Cypriot side had not developed an effective policy against this. Evaluating developments regarding Varosha and Famagusta as well, Mavros argued that the Greek Cypriot leadership had failed to seize past opportunities for a solution. Referring to the Greek Cypriot side's rejection of the Annan Plan in 2004, Mavros stated that the continuation of the current political approach could pave the way for the two-state solution to become permanent.
