The Kor Mor natural gas field in Sulaymaniyah province in northern Iraq was targeted by unidentified UAVs. In the attack, reportedly carried out with three UAVs, the gas storage facility was hit, while production was completely halted for security reasons. Following the interruption of gas shipments to five power plants, it was announced that electricity generation in the region could experience a drop of up to 2,800 megawatts.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack was carried out on the Kor Mor natural gas field, which meets a significant portion of the energy needs of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Operations were suspended at the facility in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah Province following the attack.

GAS STORAGE FACILITY HIT, PRODUCTION COMPLETELY HALTED

Security sources speaking to Reuters reported that gas production was stopped after the attack. An engineer working at the facility said that the UAVs targeted the gas storage section and that smoke rose from the area after the attack.

It was stated that employees were directed to shelters against the possibility of another attack. Reports in the Iraqi press claimed that the attack was carried out with three UAVs.

GAS FLOW TO 5 POWER PLANTS CUT OFF

After the attack, a serious disruption occurred in the region's energy infrastructure. KRG Electricity Ministry Spokesperson Umayd Ahmed announced that natural gas shipments from the Kor Mor field to five power plants had stopped.

Ahmed, noting that plants in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Bazian, Chamchamal and Duhok were affected, said a decrease of 2,500 to 2,800 megawatts in electricity generation was expected.

MEASURES TAKEN AGAINST POWER OUTAGES

The regional administration has moved to activate alternative energy sources in order to reduce the loss in electricity supply.

Within this scope, it was planned to use hydroelectric power plants at the Dukan and Derbendikhan dams and to bring facilities using alternative fuel into operation. It was reported that priority would be given to meeting the energy needs of critical points such as hospitals and water facilities.

Officials stated that if gas shipments resume, electricity supply could gradually return to normal starting from noon on Monday, November 9.

IT HAD BEEN ATTACKED BEFORE

The Kor Mor natural gas field, one of the region's most important energy facilities, had also been the target of similar attacks in the past.

In an attack on the facility in April 2024, four Yemeni workers lost their lives. Another attack carried out in November 2025 caused gas production to stop and widespread power outages in the region.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the latest attack, and no official statement has been made regarding who sent the UAVs.
