As debates continue in Azerbaijan over headscarved students not being admitted to schools, a new inspection decision has been made in Baku. The Baku City Education Administration announced that in public schools, students' uniforms and teachers' clothing will be inspected for compliance with the established rules. Disagreements regarding dress rules will be evaluated by school boards.

Clothing inspections will be carried out in public schools in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. In a statement made on October 9, the Baku City Education Department announced that it would check whether students comply with school uniforms and teachers comply with the prescribed dress rules.

STUDENTS' AND TEACHERS' CLOTHING WILL BE INSPECTED

Within the scope of the new measure, it will be examined whether students in Baku's public schools wear the prescribed school uniforms. The inspections will not be limited to students only. Teachers' compliance with dress standards will also be checked.

Disagreements that may arise during the implementation of the dress rules are expected to be evaluated by the schools' pedagogical councils.

IT FOLLOWED THE HEADSCARF DEBATES

The inspection decision came after complaints in Azerbaijan that headscarved students were not admitted to some schools.

Footage showing that headscarved students were not allowed inside a school in the Jalilabad region had caused controversy.

Regulations made within the framework of dress standards in schools and the principle of secularism had brought about debates regarding the use of the headscarf in educational institutions in the country.

TEACHERS' CLOTHING IS ALSO ON THE AGENDA

On October 6, a dress regulation for teachers was also adopted in Azerbaijan. After the regulation, allegations were put forward that some headscarved teachers were prevented from working.

In the new inspections announced in Baku, the fact that teachers' compliance with dress rules will also be examined drew attention.

THERE IS NO EXPLICIT PROVISION REGARDING THE HEADSCARF

The dress regulation adopted in Azerbaijan on September 21 does not contain an explicit prohibition provision regarding the headscarf. However, debates continue over how the regulation will be implemented in schools.

In the inspection decision announced by the Baku City Education Department, no special measure regarding the headscarf was announced either. It was reported that the inspections are intended to determine whether general dress standards are being followed.
