The new Medium-Term Program (MTP), which will determine the roadmap of the Turkish economy for the 2027-2029 period, is being announced today. With the program, new targets regarding inflation, growth, employment, exports, budget balance, and financial stability will be revealed. Attention is particularly focused on possible changes to inflation and growth forecasts.
The anticipated day has arrived for the Medium-Term Program covering the 2027-2029 period, which will chart the course of the Turkish economy for the next three years. The new MTP, whose preparations are nearing completion, will be shared with the public today.
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz had previously announced in a statement that the details of the new program would be revealed on Sunday, September 6.
THE ECONOMY'S 3-YEAR ROADMAP WILL BE DETERMINED
With the announcement of the new MTP, the policies planned to be implemented in the economy during the 2027-2029 period and the main macroeconomic targets will emerge.
In the program, it is expected that a roadmap will particularly be determined under the headings of price stability, the fight against inflation, economic growth, employment, and financial stability.
Appropriation proposal ceilings for public administrations will also be announced within the scope of the new program.
FOCUS WILL BE ON INFLATION AND GROWTH TARGETS
New inflation and growth targets are at the top of the headings the markets will follow most closely. In addition to these, structural reforms are also expected to hold significant importance in the program.
With the MTP, basic economic aggregates, public revenue and expenditure estimates, budget balance, and projections regarding borrowing will also be presented.
HOW IS THE MTP PREPARED?
The Medium-Term Program is prepared through the joint work of the Presidency's Strategy and Budget Directorate and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.
Following President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's signature, the program is published in the Official Gazette.
The MTP includes not only economic targets but also the priority reform areas planned to be implemented to achieve these targets and the relevant schedule.
WHAT WERE THE TARGETS IN THE CURRENT PROGRAM?
In the current MTP covering the 2026-2028 period, the Turkish economy was targeted to grow by 3.8 percent in 2026, 4.3 percent in 2027, and 5 percent in 2028.
The inflation target was set at 16 percent for 2026, 9 percent for 2027, and 8 percent for 2028.
The budget deficit ratio to gross domestic product was projected to be 3.5 percent in 2026 and 2.8 percent by the end of the program period.
TARGETS WERE ALSO SET FOR UNEMPLOYMENT, EXPORTS, AND IMPORTS
In the current program, the unemployment rate was targeted to decline to 8.4 percent in 2026, 8.2 percent in 2027, and 7.8 percent in 2028.
The export target was set at $282 billion for 2026, $294 billion for 2027, and $308.5 billion for 2028.
Imports were projected to be $378 billion, $393 billion, and $410.5 billion in the same period, respectively.
EYES ARE ON THE NEW FIGURES TO BE ANNOUNCED TODAY
With the announcement of the new MTP to the public, it will become clear which of the current targets are maintained and which have been revised. In particular, the 2027-2029 targets for inflation, growth, unemployment, and the budget deficit will be closely monitored by economic circles and markets.
