In the East African country of Kenya, public anger continues to remain at high levels due to the cost of living and economic pressures. Kenya President William Ruto was attacked with a shoe during a speech he made about the cost of living at a rally in the Migori region.
3 PEOPLE IN CUSTODY
While Ruto was saying, "We said we are lowering fertilizer prices, is it right or wrong?" he deflected a shoe thrown at him by someone in the crowd with his arm. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen announced that 3 people have been taken into custody regarding the incident.
ECONOMIC UNREST IN KENYA
After taking office, Kenya President William Ruto promised financial reforms and argued that tax increases were necessary to reduce dependence on external borrowing. However, these policies have caused significant backlash, especially among the youth, and protests against the bill quickly spread across the country. The protests, which turned into violent incidents nationwide, resulted in the deaths of 23 people and injuries to 30 others. Following the protests, President Ruto stated, "After closely listening to the Kenyan people who loudly expressed that they do not want this bill, I decided to take a step back. I will not sign the bill and it will be withdrawn later."
