An alarm has been raised regarding the antibiotic named 'Bactrim', which is used globally, particularly for the treatment of middle ear infections, stomach, chest, and urinary tract infections.

CAN LEAD TO DEATH

Recent studies have revealed that, in addition to lung issues, the side effects caused by Bactrim can lead to death. Experts stated that the drug triggers this condition through an effect on the immune system.

1 IN 3 PATIENTS USING IT DIED

A study conducted in 2021 proved that 1 in 3 patients using Bactrim lost their lives, and 20% of them underwent lung transplants. Following the research, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to add a warning about "severe lung side effects" to the drug's label.

DECISION TO REMOVE FROM SHELVES

Most recently, the survival struggle of 12-year-old Emmie Bellucci, who lives in Texas, highlighted that the drug can lead to respiratory failure, especially in young patients. After this development, the FDA decided to remove Bactrim from the shelves. The first state to implement this decision was Alabama.

ALSO USED IN TURKEY

Bactrim is frequently preferred for the treatment of children in Turkey as well. In the U.S., Bactrim is used annually by approximately 3 million people for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
