TURKEY'S APPLICATION TO THE ECHR REGARDING SELAHATTIN DEMIRTAS
While there is curiosity about whether former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş will be released, a noteworthy development has occurred. Just one day before the deadline for Turkey's appeal against the ECHR's violation and release decision regarding Demirtaş, the Ministry of Justice took action.
Turkey has requested that the violation decision regarding Demirtaş be addressed by the Grand Chamber of the ECHR. Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Justice went to Strasbourg to appeal against Demirtaş's release.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Ankara 22nd Heavy Criminal Court completed the reasoned decision for the sentence given to former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş in the Kobani case after 13 months, and Demirtaş's lawyers prepared a comprehensive 400-page defense against the approximately 30,000-page reasoned decision. The deadline for Turkey's appeal against the ECHR's second violation and release decision regarding the detained Selahattin Demirtaş ends on October 8. If Turkey does not appeal, the ECHR's decision will become final. Therefore, as attention turns to October 8, Demirtaş's lawyers have made the first application for release to the appellate court to which the file was sent.
