In a statement made by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, it was reported that an emergency signal was received from an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) device on a ship off the coast of Silivri within the traffic separation scheme in the Sea of Marmara at 03:26 via the Satellite-Assisted Search and Rescue System (Cospas-Sarsat).

In the statement where it was noted that the received emergency signal belonged to the ship Tuğberk İmamoğlu, it was stated that at 03:41, the captain of the ALSU tanker reported to the Ship Traffic Services Center that around 03:15 he had collided with a ship whose identity he did not know.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO THE ACCIDENT
While search efforts continued for the 10 crew members of the ship with which communication could not be established, an investigation was launched into the incident by the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office instructed teams to collect evidence regarding the cause of the incident, the identification of any responsible persons, and the determination of the ship's radar and communication systems. One deputy chief public prosecutor and two public prosecutors were assigned to the accident.
