Beşiktaş was set to earn a €2 million bonus from Rafa Silva's transfer if Benfica finished the league in the top two. However, since Benfica ended the season in third place, the bonus clause was not triggered, and the black-and-whites missed out on the extra income opportunity.
In the last week of the Portuguese Premier League, Benfica, managed by Jose Mourinho, defeated Estoril 3-1 at home.
BENFICA FINISHED THE SEASON THIRD
Rafa Silva, who scored his team's third goal in the 16th minute of the match, had transferred from Beşiktaş to the Portuguese representative during the mid-season transfer window. Despite this victory raising their points to 80, Benfica could not change their position in the league standings and finished the season in 3rd place.
2 MILLION EURO BONUS CANCELED
According to details reported by Record; a performance-based protocol was established between Benfica and Beşiktaş for Rafa Silva's transfer, in addition to a net transfer fee of 5 million Euros. Under this agreement, if Benfica finished the league in the top two positions and directly secured a UEFA Champions League spot, the black-and-white club would receive an additional 2 million Euros. However, Benfica's failure to achieve the top-two target, meaning they will compete in the UEFA Europa League next season, has led to the complete cancellation of the said performance bonus.
