Burhan Köroğlu has been appointed as the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Turkish Embassy in Damascus.

In 2012, Turkey halted its diplomatic activities in Syria, and 12 years later, it appointed Burhan Köroğlu, Turkey's ambassador to Nouakchott, as the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy in Damascus.

The Turkish Ambassador to Nouakchott, Burhan Köroğlu, has been appointed as the Acting Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy in Damascus.

According to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey's Ambassador to Nouakchott, Köroğlu, has been assigned as the Acting Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy in Damascus. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has informed Ambassador Köroğlu of his new duty.

ACTIVITIES WERE TERMINATED IN 2012

The Turkish Embassy, located near the Ravda Square in Damascus, where diplomatic missions are concentrated, continued to operate for a while during the period when the regime resorted to violence against peaceful protesters, but it suspended its daily activities on March 26, 2012. Embassy staff and their families also returned to Turkey with this decision. The Consulate General of Syria in Istanbul, however, continued its activities.

WHO IS BURHAN KÖROĞLU?

He was born in Istanbul in 1962. After completing his degree in Philosophy at Istanbul University, he obtained a Master's degree from the University of Jordan and completed his PhD in Islamic Philosophy at Marmara University. He worked as a faculty member at Marmara University, Middlebury College (USA), the University of Jordan, Bahçeşehir University, and Ibn Khaldun University, and most recently served as a professor at the Institute of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at Marmara University.

At different times, he held positions such as the Director of the Center for Civilization Studies (MEDAM) at Bahçeşehir University, the Director of the Institute of Social Sciences at Ibn Khaldun University, the Head of the Philosophy Department at Ibn Khaldun University, and a Senior Researcher at the Al Jazeera Research Center in Qatar. Burhan Köroğlu, who also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Jazeera Turkish Television for a period, has published original and translated works in Turkish, Arabic, and English in the fields of Islamic Philosophy, Political Thought, and Turkish-Arab Relations.

With the Presidential Decision dated November 14, 2023, and numbered 2023/497, Ambassador Köroğlu was appointed as the Turkish Ambassador to Nouakchott; he started his duties on December 15, 2023.
