The posts of French soldiers using the exercise tracking app Strava accidentally revealed France's nuclear secrets. Following the posts, submarine patrol dates and other details were visible on Strava, while the navy stated, "There is negligence, but no risk."
According to Le Monde, the posts of sailors using the exercise tracking app Strava have accidentally revealed France's nuclear secrets.
France operates a ballistic missile submarine fleet powered by four nuclear forces, and one of them must always be at sea in case of a potential attack.
SOLDIERS ACCIDENTALLY SENT EXERCISE DATA
However, some base personnel accidentally sent exercise data to Strava. This led to the submarine patrol dates and other details being visible on Strava. The Navy stated, "There is negligence, but no risk."
EXTRAORDINARY SECURITY AT THE BASE
The security of the base is ensured through land, sea, and drone patrols. More than two thousand employees are required to show their credentials when entering the base. Scanners, facial recognition systems, and dog teams carefully monitor security. Mobile phones and other electronic devices are banned in a large part of the base and are stored in special boxes at multiple checkpoints.
UNINTENTIONALLY EXPOSED
However, the scandal could not prevent extremely sensitive information from leaking out of this security fortress. The investigation revealed that submarine soldiers unintentionally disclosed information about the speed of patrols online by using the Strava app, which allows them to record and share their training. The bodyguards of French, American, and Russian presidents who use the app can also be tracked.
