UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, while criticizing FIFA President Gianni Infantino, announced that he will not be a candidate in the FIFA presidential election to be held in March 2027. Ceferin said that if he were to go to the election, he expects another candidate to emerge against Infantino.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has announced that he will not enter the race to replace FIFA President Gianni Infantino, whom he has criticized.
CEFERIN'S DECISION ON THE FIFA PRESIDENCY
Despite being seen as a potential rival to FIFA President Infantino, Ceferin expressed his commitment to UEFA during a program he attended.
Infantino is under increasing pressure from the international football community to resign following the failure of his plans to attract private investment for FIFA tournaments.
Ceferin said, "There are different discussions every day. I haven't spoken to him. But there are two options. One option is that he realizes he has no support; this means not just the political support of those who vote, but also the political support of the football community, fans, players, former players, and coaches. The second option is that he goes to the elections in March, but in that case, I think there will be a candidate against him. I don't know who it is yet."
Regarding Infantino, who was born in Switzerland to a family of Italian origin, Ceferin remarked, "But I think someone should remind him that he is European, because he has forgotten that."
''I'M NOT INTERESTED FOR TWO REASONS''
On his thoughts about not running for the FIFA Presidency, Ceferin said the following:
"I'm not interested for two reasons. First, I love UEFA and working here very much, and I think at some point, it's time to enjoy life. The second point is that if I don't have an interest in this position, my credibility is much higher."
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN MARCH 2027
The FIFA presidential election will be held in March 2027, and Infantino, who has held this position since February 2016, is expected to run for re-election.
