U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a 50 percent tariff will be applied to all automobiles, automotive parts, and steel products imported from Canada as of January 1, 2027. Trump, reacting to the trade deficit between the two countries, stated that Canada will no longer be treated 'like a state.'
US President Donald Trump has imposed new customs duties on Canada, effective from next year.
50 PERCENT TARIFF ON ALL AUTOMOBILES, AUTOMOTIVE PARTS, AND STEEL IMPORTS
In a post on his social media account, Trump, who claimed that Canada had been "ripping off" them for years, stated that the $60 billion deficit between the two countries was not sustainable and that this would no longer continue.
Trump said, "As of January 1, 2027, tariffs on all automobiles, large or small trucks, automotive parts, and steel will be raised to 50 percent. Produce in the USA, pay zero tariffs. Canada will no longer be treated as if it were a state."
"WE DON'T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US"
Stating that Canada is among the most difficult countries to do business with in trade and other areas, Trump continued: "They consider themselves privileged, but we don't need Canada; they need us. They conduct 95 percent of their trade with the US, while for us, the exact opposite is true."
CARNEY HAD SAID THEY WOULD "RESPOND ONE-TO-ONE" TO THE US
Following the US move to impose a 50 percent customs duty on many products from Canada, last week's trade negotiations ended without an agreement.
In a press conference held on Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the US had proposed terms in the trade negotiations that were "economically unviable and unfair," and said that they would respond one-to-one to Washington's new tariffs in order to protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses.
