Chad Military Gov't, Rebels Sign Peace Deal In Qatar

08.08.2022 12:12

Agreement paves way for broad national reconciliation dialogue in Chad later this month.

Chad's transitional military authorities and rebel groups on Monday signed a peace agreement in Doha following five months of talks hosted in the Qatari capital.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the African Union, several regional organizations, and ambassadors.

The peace deal paves the way for holding a broad national reconciliation dialogue in the Chadian capital N'Djamena on Aug. 20.

Since March, Qatar has facilitated negotiations between opposition groups and the military government of Mahamat Idriss Deby, a general who seized power after his father died in April 2021. He promised elections in 18 months, and is under international pressure to meet the October deadline.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani thanked all those who put in efforts leading to the deal, and hoped all parties will engage in dialogue.
