After CHP Edirne Deputy Ahmet Baran Yazgan was beaten following an alleged harassment at a birthday celebration, the party leadership took action. CHP referred Yazgan to disciplinary proceedings with a request for permanent expulsion.
The events following a birthday celebration attended by Ahmet Baran Yazgan, a member of parliament from the Republican People's Party (CHP) for Edirne, became the top item on the agenda. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an ex officio investigation into Yazgan, who was beaten on allegations of "sexual harassment" and whose moments were recorded on a mobile phone. Following the developments, the CHP administration announced that Yazgan had been referred to disciplinary proceedings with a request for definite expulsion.
BEATING AT HOME AFTER THE CELEBRATION
The incident occurred at around 03:00 AM the previous night in an apartment located in the Cumhuriyet Neighborhood of Edirne. According to allegations, after attending an outdoor birthday celebration, MP Yazgan went to the home of a woman named T.A., where he began drinking alcohol with those present. In the later hours of the night, it was claimed that Yazgan sexually harassed T.A., triggering a violent argument in the home. As the argument quickly turned into a fight, a man named N.D. and women named B.Ş. and T.A., who were in the house, beat Yazgan. The incident was recorded second by second on a mobile phone camera by T.A., one of the suspects.
POLICE INTERVENED AFTER NEIGHBORS' REPORT
Upon the report of building residents who heard the noise and sounds of the fight coming from the apartment, police teams were quickly dispatched to the scene. The teams that arrived at the address took N.D., B.Ş., and T.A., who were involved in the incident, into custody. In the incident, which was taken to the police station, the parties filed mutual complaints against each other. While the CHP deputy stated that he had been beaten and his mobile phone had been confiscated and filed complaints against all three individuals, the detained suspects claimed that Yazgan had committed "sexual harassment," "threat," and "insult" crimes against them.
SUSPECTS RELEASED, EX OFFICIO INVESTIGATION INTO DEPUTY
After the completion of their interrogation and procedures at the police department, the three suspects were referred to the Edirne Courthouse and were released by the criminal judgeship of peace with judicial control conditions. On the other hand, a critical step was taken on the judicial front against MP Yazgan. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an ex officio investigation into Ahmet Baran Yazgan on allegations of "sexual assault."
RAPID DECISION FROM CHP: SPOKESPERSON SARI ANNOUNCED
Following the reflection of the harassment allegations and the judicial process to the public, the CHP headquarters quickly intervened in the situation. The party administration made an urgent assessment of Yazgan's situation and pressed the button for a decision of definite expulsion. The official statement on the matter was made by CHP Party Spokesperson Müslim Sarı via his social media account. Sarı included the following statements in his announcement:
"Within the framework of our party's fundamental principles, bylaws, and disciplinary provisions, Edirne MP Ahmet Baran Yazgan has been referred to disciplinary proceedings with a request for 'definite expulsion' as of today."
