The downpour that began Tuesday night in Istanbul and continued intermittently until midday Thursday left major damage behind. As cleanup efforts continue in Sarıyer Ayazağa, one of the areas most affected by the flood, Haberler.com reporter Gizem Deniz Özkan went to the region and spoke with citizens who experienced the disaster.
"WE SAW SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN AYAZAĞA FOR THE FIRST TIME"
Two citizens who were trapped in their cars during the flood were able to escape by getting out through the roofs of their vehicles.
One of the citizens, drawing attention to the scale of the flooding, said, "The stream overflowed, and when it came from the drains and everywhere else, it turned into this. And for the first time, we saw something like this in Ayazağa."
"MY STAFF FLED BY SWIMMING FOR THEIR LIVES"
A pizzeria in the area affected by the flood was also left unusable. The business owner said the water rose suddenly and employees had to flee the workplace to save their lives.
The business owner said, "In an unexpected moment, the shop was completely submerged. When the flood suddenly happened here, my staff fled from here almost by swimming for their lives."
"THE PARKING LOT FILLED UP IN 5 MINUTES"
Another citizen, who parked his car during the flood and waited for the rain to stop, described how the flooding occurred.
Stating that he came to the area around 17:00, the citizen said, "The military wall burst from over there and came down here. This parking lot completely filled up within five minutes. The wall burst from there. A few cars also went down from there. When the wall burst, this place was relieved."
"EVERYONE WAS AFFECTED"
Another citizen, noting that there was large-scale damage in the area after the disaster, said what happened affected everyone.
The citizen said, "A disaster happened, so best wishes to everyone. Everyone was affected. The trouble here is great right now, but everyone is working, large teams. I hope it will be better."
