Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to US President Donald Trump's statement in Ankara that 'Greenland should be under US control.' Frederiksen, who was in Ankara for the NATO Summit, said, 'Greenland is of course not for sale. We have made that clear from the very beginning,' calling for respect for Denmark's sovereignty.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who is in Ankara for the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government, made statements to the Danish press regarding US President Donald Trump's remarks that "Greenland should be under US control."
"GREENLAND IS NOT FOR SALE"
Stating that Greenland does not want to be part of the US, Frederiksen said, "Greenland is certainly not for sale. We have made that clear from the very beginning."
Frederiksen stated that they expect NATO to respect Denmark's sovereignty.
TRUMP HAD BROUGHT IT UP AGAIN
US President Donald Trump brought the Greenland issue back to the agenda during the Ankara Summit, where NATO leaders gathered in Turkey.
Speaking to journalists during his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump argued that Greenland should be controlled by the US, not Denmark.
"It should be controlled by the US, not by Denmark," said Trump, emphasizing that Greenland holds strategic importance for the US.
Trump reiterated his view that Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, should come under US control, once again bringing up a topic that has caused tension between Washington and Copenhagen, and more broadly across Europe.
"THIS IS WHAT DAMAGES MY RELATIONS WITH NATO"
Claiming that the issue of Greenland's control harms his relations with NATO, Trump said: "This is what damages my relations with NATO, because Greenland does not benefit Denmark. Denmark is not spending money to truly help Greenland, but this is an important region for the US and is surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships; this situation is unacceptable."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stated in June that discussions with Denmark and Greenland continue on a monthly basis.
