In the opening week of the Trendyol Super League, Fenerbahce suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Genclerbirligi, disappointing their fans, and the critical factors behind this loss are coming to the forefront. Here are the 5 main reasons that led to the yellow-navy team's unpleasant start to the season:
1. EXCESSIVE AND EARLY ROTATION
Head coach Ismail Kartal made extensive rotations in the squad, considering the critical Lyon match in the Champions League play-off round. However, these radical squad changes, made before the team's rhythm and harmony were fully established in the first official league match of the season, negatively affected on-field organization and weakened Fenerbahce's pressing.
2. DEFENSIVE WEAKNESS OF WINGERS
The choices of Irfan Can Kahveci and Oguz Aydin on the wings brought serious defensive problems. The failure of both players to provide adequate support to their full-backs and the spaces they left behind were well exploited by Genclerbirligi. The Ankara-based team effectively penetrated the areas between the wing and center, especially in quick attacks, and the Fenerbahce defense was insufficient in terms of positioning and timing of interventions in both goals.
3. LACK OF TEAM RHYTHM AND COHESION
Due to the start of the season, the lack of harmony and physical tempo among players was clearly reflected on the pitch. Especially the disconnections caused by the new and substitute-heavy lineup prevented the yellow-navy team from developing organized attacks.
4. SPACES LEFT IN TRANSITION ATTACKS
Fenerbahce's slowness in transitioning from attack to defense made it easier for Genclerbirligi to find dangerous counter-attacks. The wide gaps in midfield and the lack of timely interventions against the opponent's fast breaks were the main reasons for the threats seen on the goal.
5. INDIVIDUAL ERRORS AND LOSS OF CONCENTRATION
Simple ball losses at moments of taking or protecting the lead, and concentration lapses in the defensive line, paved the way for the opponent to equalize and take the lead.
