Fatma Çakmak (36), who was in the process of divorce from her husband, police officer Yasin Çakmak (44), was beaten by him in Ankara. Fatma Çakmak, a mother of three living in Ankara, stated that she had been subjected to psychological and physical violence for many years and filed for divorce from her police officer husband Yasin Çakmak in April last year. While the case was ongoing, on January 9, Fatma Çakmak was allegedly beaten by her husband at their home. Fatma Çakmak, who had cuts on her face and signs of assault on various parts of her body, filed a complaint against her husband. Following the complaint, Yasin Çakmak was taken into custody and released after his statement. After the incident, Fatma Çakmak came to her hometown, Şanlıurfa. Yasin Çakmak was arrested on January 17.

Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a prison sentence of up to 15.5 years was sought for Yasin Çakmak for the crimes of 'qualified intentional injury against a woman' and 'threat', and up to 4.5 years for Fatma Çakmak for the crime of 'intentional injury against a spouse'.

CASE SENT TO HEAVY PENAL COURT

At the first hearing of the case held at Ankara 64th Criminal Court of First Instance, the parties made their defenses. In his defense, Yasin Çakmak claimed that he found an unfamiliar mobile phone belonging to his wife in the dirty laundry basket in the bathroom. Stating that he suspected being cheated on, Yasin Çakmak claimed that he tried to take the phone from her hand to prevent her from seeing messages, and that she injured him with a knife. The defendant, claiming that his wife then took his official pistol from the bedroom, argued that a scuffle broke out between them while he was trying to get the gun back.

When the file was transferred to the heavy penal court, the defendant claimed at the hearing that he read sexual content messages his wife had with a man. Fatma Çakmak, stating that she had wanted a divorce since April 2025, said that on the day of the incident, her husband slapped her and then attacked her. Fatma Çakmak, explaining that she took a knife from the kitchen to protect herself, stated that her husband took the knife from her hand and injured her. Fatma Çakmak claimed that Yasin Çakmak then took her to the bedroom, took out his official pistol, and forced her to perform various actions with the gun. Stating that after she locked the door, her husband broke the door and attacked her, Fatma Çakmak said, 'He acted with the intent to kill me. Part of my face was completely closed. I had 60 stitches on my face.'

REDUCED FROM 7.5 YEARS TO 4 YEARS 2 MONTHS

Ankara 33rd Heavy Penal Court completed the trial on July 21. The court sentenced Fatma Çakmak to 2.5 years in prison for 'intentional injury' for injuring her husband. Yasin Çakmak was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for 'intentional injury'. The court reduced this sentence to 4 years and 2 months by applying deductions for unjust provocation and good conduct, taking into account the defendant's behavior during the trial. The court also acquitted Yasin Çakmak of the crime of 'threat against a woman' and ordered his release.
