In the İBB case, a denial came from the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the claims of former CHP MP Aykut Erdoğdu, who is on trial, that they were not provided with food and water during the hearing held at the Marmara Penal Institution. The statement said, "Daily provisions and water are provided according to the number of detainees attending the hearing. Additionally, depending on the hearing times, a practice has been initiated to provide detainees with a hot meal obtained from the general cafeteria for their evening meal."
The reaction of former CHP Member of Parliament Aykut Erdoğdu, who is being tried in custody in the corruption case against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, regarding the conditions at the Marmara Penal Institution where the hearings are held, drew attention. Erdoğdu claimed that no food and water were provided to the detainees during the hearings.
"THE ALLEGATIONS THAT DETAINEES WERE NOT PROVIDED WITH FOOD AND WATER DO NOT REFLECT THE TRUTH"
The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office denied the allegation. In the statement made by the Prosecutor's Office, the following expressions were included: "In some press and media outlets and social media accounts; based on the statement of a defendant who spoke at the hearing dated 06/04/2026 in the Istanbul 40th Heavy Penal Court's case numbered 2025/318; it has been observed that false news and shares have been made regarding the ongoing trials in the hearing rooms of the Marmara Penal Institution, claiming that no food and water were provided to the detainees, that the holding cells were filthy, that torture was being carried out, that sandwiches were given with cheese cut with a razor, and that the places where they sat were in very poor condition.
The hearing rooms located in the Marmara Penal Institution Campus, which falls within the scope of our Chief Public Prosecutor's duties and responsibilities, are intensively used in trials of cases with a high number of parties and security risks.
"DAILY FOOD AND WATER ARE PROVIDED ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF DETAINEES"
In the building where the hearing rooms are located, there are a total of 6 holding cells, 3 for men and 3 for women, covering an area of 1208 square meters, with a total capacity of 300 people. In this area, 2 Correctional Officers are permanently assigned, and between 10 and 200 Gendarmerie personnel are assigned according to the number of detainees attending the hearing. The cleanliness of the area is regularly maintained by the prison administration, and daily food and water are provided according to the number of detainees attending the hearing.
"HOT MEAL APPLICATION HAS BEEN INITIATED"
Additionally, as a result of the evaluation made by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, depending on the hearing times, an application has been initiated to provide the evening meal of the detainees with hot food obtained from the general cafeteria of the campus.
On the other hand, in the trials conducted by multiple courts in the hearing rooms of the Marmara Penal Institutions, depending on overlapping hearing dates, the number of defendants, and the lunch break durations to be given by the court, it is planned to provide hot meals instead of ready-made food during lunch as well. This is respectfully announced to the public."
