In the Mexican Senate, the leader of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, Alejandro Alito Moreno, attacked Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Norona, stating that he was not given the floor.
The session held in the Mexican Senate ended in a brawl. Alejandro Alito Moreno, the leader of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), approached Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Norona while the deputies were singing the national anthem at the end of the session.
In moments captured on camera, it was seen that PNI leader Moreno approached Senate President Norona to speak, and then grabbed Norona by the arm and pulled him. As tensions rose between the two, opposition leader Moreno attacked Senate President Norona. Moreno also pushed a photographer who intervened, causing him to fall to the ground. Another deputy joined the fight and attacked Norona, who was trying to leave the hall.
"THREATENED TO KILL ME"
In a press conference held after the incident, Norona stated, "Moreno started to pull me, touch me, and push me. He hit me and said, 'I will beat you badly, I will kill you.'" Norona mentioned that he would hold an emergency meeting on Friday and propose the expulsion of Moreno and three PRI deputies due to the fight. Norona said the brawl erupted after a "difficult discussion" regarding the presence of soldiers from other countries in Mexico.
"I WAS NOT GIVEN THE RIGHT TO SPEAK"
PNI leader Moreno stated in a social media post that he was not given the right to speak during the session, that the opposition was being silenced, and that tensions rose afterward. Moreno claimed that Senate President Norona initiated the first physical attack.
