8 MILLION LIRA FINE FOR GSM COMPANIES

Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Advisor of the Ministry of Trade, said in a post on his social media account:

"The Advertising Board, operating within our Ministry of Trade, at its meeting No. 373 dated September 10, 2026, imposed sanctions on two GSM and telecommunications companies as a result of its investigations into 5G advertisements that are misleading to consumers. In the investigations, it was determined that statements regarding the coverage area and technological superiority of the 5G service exceeded the truth and created a perception of absolute superiority in consumers, and that consumers could be misled by associating the 5G technology, which has not yet been opened for commercial use, with campaign advantages. In this context, it was decided to impose an administrative fine totaling 7 million 983 thousand 304 TL on the two companies and to stop the relevant advertisements. Our Ministry of Trade resolutely continues its inspection and sanction activities in order to ensure that consumers are informed accurately, clearly and completely, to prevent unfair competition through misleading advertisements and to protect consumer rights."
