A fire broke out on the roof of a historical building belonging to Istanbul University of Health Sciences in Uskudar, Istanbul. The building, which is approximately 121 years old, caught fire during renovation works. The fire was brought under control after about 2 hours of work, but the dome of the building collapsed. A fire broke out during the renovation of the 3-storey building owned by the Health Sciences University in Selimiye, Üsküdar. During the intervention of the fire brigade, the burning dome of the building collapsed.
FIRE STARTED DURING RENOVATION A fire broke out on the roof of the approximately 121-year-old historic building, which is located on Tıbbiye Street in Üsküdar and was previously used as the Faculty of Law and Pharmacy of Marmara University and is now used by the Health Sciences University, around 13.00 while renovation was being carried out.
EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE FIRE FROM SPREADING TO OTHER BUILDINGS Upon notification, fire brigades from Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Ümraniye, and Ataşehir were dispatched to the scene. The police took precautions on Tıbbiye Street and ensured controlled traffic flow. The fire brigade intervened from multiple points to the burning roof. The teams, who made efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the building, brought the fire under control after approximately 2 hours of work.
DOZENS OF FIRE TRUCKS AND PERSONNEL MOBILIZED It was reported that a total of 24 fire trucks and 70 firefighters intervened in the fire. While one person was affected by smoke, there were no deaths or injuries. The police initiated an investigation into the fire.
STATEMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY In a statement made by the Health Sciences University regarding the fire, it was stated that "Today, a fire occurred during the restoration works on the roof of our Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane campus building. The fire caused material damage but thankfully did not result in any loss of life or injuries. Upon receiving the fire notification, our university's relevant units, as well as all teams in our city, intervened rapidly and brought the fire under control, and then started the necessary cooling process. We would like to express our gratitude especially to all units of Istanbul Governorship, Üsküdar District Governor Adem Yazıcı, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality fire brigade teams, our security forces, and our university's relevant units who showed great effort in fighting the fire. Thanks to the support and coordination provided by our state, the effects of this unfortunate incident have been minimized, and the fact that there were no casualties or injuries is a great source of consolation."
