Forest fires on the Greek islands of Evia and Salamis are being fought from air and land. Civil Protection has warned those in the Selinia area to head to the coast. The fire is partially under control, while a four-day heatwave is expected across the country.
It has been reported that efforts to combat forest fires on the islands of Evia and Salamis in Greece continue from air and land.
WILDFIRES PERSIST IN GREECE
Forest fires continued today in Greece, where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in some regions.
According to reports in the national press, a fire broke out in a forested area in the Milaki region of Evia Island. Ground crews were deployed to extinguish the fire, and 5 firefighting helicopters were dispatched to the area to assist in the efforts.
A fire also broke out in the Selinia region of Salamis Island.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of Greece requested, via emergency code messages sent to mobile phones in the area, that those in the Selinia region head to the coast. The fire, which was tackled from air and land, was partially brought under control.
TEMPERATURES EXCEED 40 DEGREES
Meanwhile, desert-like heat began to be felt across the country starting today, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some regions.
According to forecasts from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, the heatwave expected to take effect from today is predicted to last approximately 4 days nationwide, with temperatures gradually decreasing from Wednesday onward.
Heavy rainfall and storms are expected to follow the extreme heat.
In Greece, where dozens of forest fires have occurred in recent weeks, experts warn to be cautious against potential new fires.
