Brazil's Supreme Court has definitively upheld the 4-year and 2-month prison sentence imposed on former President Jair Bolsonaro's son and congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro. Eduardo Bolsonaro was accused of attempting to involve the US administration in the process to halt the coup attempt investigation against his father.
Bad news came for son Bolsonaro, who sought help from the US to save his father. The Supreme Court officially confirmed the 4-year, 2-month prison sentence.
ATTEMPT OF ILLEGAL INTERFERENCE IN THE JUDICIARY The court ruled that Eduardo Bolsonaro tried to pressure Brazilian judicial officials by involving the US administration, thereby illegally interfering with the judicial process. The case stemmed from Eduardo's efforts last year to block the coup investigation opened against his father.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro "LOBBYING ACTIVITIES AGAINST HIS OWN COUNTRY" Former President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison for "plotting a coup to overthrow the democratic order" after his defeat in the 2022 elections. On September 11, 2025, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who confirmed this sentence, also made a striking statement in the Bolsonaro son's case. Judge Moraes said Eduardo Bolsonaro's role "is not to carry out lobbying activities abroad against his own country."
Meanwhile, Eduardo Bolsonaro's lawyers, who strongly objected to the decision, argued that the evidence in the file was insufficient to convict their client.

The process also turned into an international crisis. In a letter sent to Lula da Silva on July 9, 2025, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50 percent customs tariff on Brazil starting August 1 if the case against Bolsonaro was not dropped.
