It was learned that Mehdi Zana had been receiving treatment at the hospital for COPD for some time and had been in intensive care recently. Zana passed away at the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
SERVED AS MAYOR BETWEEN 1977 AND 1980
Mehdi Zana was elected Mayor of Diyarbakır as an independent candidate in the 1977 local elections. He held the position, which he began in 1977, until 1980. Zana's mayoralty ended following the military coup on September 12, 1980.
Mehdi Zana's funeral is expected to be held tomorrow at Yeniköy Cemetery in Diyarbakır.
