A debate broke out during the discussion of the Kızılay Law bill at the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey due to the fund investigation. İYİ Party Deputy Group Chair Turhan Çömez asked about the source of the money, claiming that a former minister whose name he did not give had put in 163 million liras and received 2 billion 170 million liras in 5 months. AK Party Deputy Group Chair Muhammet Emin Akbaşoğlu stated that 282 people were processed in the investigation and 84 people were arrested. Due to the tension, the session was suspended.
At the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) General Assembly, a “fund” debate took place between parliamentary group deputy chairs regarding the investigation into capital market transactions.
The GNAT General Assembly convened under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker of Parliament Yusuf Beyazıt to discuss the “Turkish Red Crescent Law” bill containing regulations concerning the Red Crescent. After off-agenda speeches and the granting of requests by MPs for one-minute speaking slots, the session moved to the section where parliamentary group deputy chairs made assessments on the agenda. In this section, a “fund” debate took place between parliamentary group deputy chairs.
CLAIM THAT HE PUT IN 163 MILLION, RECEIVED 2 BILLION 170 MILLION IN 5 MONTHS
Good Party Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Turhan Çömez said, “163 million lira, exactly 1 ton of money. We ask: a former minister, a former MP who has done nothing in his life other than civil service and politics; where did you find this 163 million lira, did you pay its tax, how did you earn it? Well, when you became an MP and minister, did you declare these in your asset declaration? There is no answer to any of them. And he puts in this 163 million lira, and within 5 months receives exactly 2 billion 170 million lira. I sat down and calculated: exactly 2 truckloads of money; he put in 1 ton, received 2 truckloads of money. And we do not know the source of this money. His AKP friends ask him, ‘Just yesterday you were begging a mayor, you could not pay the rent of a 2+1 apartment. How did it happen that you found this money? How did it happen that you took away tons of money?’ they ask; there is no answer,” he said.
CHP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Serkan Sarı, DEM Party Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli, and New Party Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Murat Emir also criticized the appointment of a trustee to Halk TV, in addition to the fund investigation.
84 ARRESTS, 27 ARREST WARRANTS IN INVESTIGATION
AK Party Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Muhammet Emin Akbaşoğlu, for his part, stated that the bill on the liquidation and repayment of funds had begun to be discussed in the GNAT Planning and Budget Committee and shared the content of the bill. Akbaşoğlu said, “The bill aims to protect the operation of capital markets in confidence, transparency and stability, to safeguard the rights and interests of investors, and to prevent the economic consequences of unlawful acts from being reflected on investors who have no connection to those acts. In this respect, while the bill concretely demonstrates the state’s determination in combating unlawfulness, irregularities and corruption in capital markets, it aims to serve the establishment of investor confidence and the maintenance of the healthy and stable operation of financial markets.”
Akbaşoğlu also spoke about the investigation and stated that legal action was taken against 282 people within the scope of the investigation, that 84 people were arrested, that arrest warrants were issued for 27 suspects, and that judicial control measures were applied to 99 people.
TENSION IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SESSION RECESSED
After CHP Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Serkan Sarı objected to his speech, Akbaşoğlu described the work carried out in cities affected by the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. Opposition MPs intervened, stating that the fund issue should be discussed. While debates took place in the General Assembly, after CHP’s Sarı struck his party group’s bench hard, a reaction came from the AK Party benches. Akbaşoğlu said, “In 2.5 years, we raised up 11 provinces where 15 million of our people live. Look, while we were doing these, Ekrem İmamoğlu also raised up his villas. Did you ever speak about the corruption and theft villas, did you ever bring a motion for an inquiry? No. We fear no one. We go after all thieves, we hold everyone accountable, and we will continue to hold them accountable.”
As debates among MPs continued in the General Assembly, Deputy Speaker Beyazıt recessed the session for 5 minutes. After the break, the General Assembly convened again. The General Assembly’s proceedings continue.
