While the heavy downpour that has been effective in Istanbul since the morning hours is adversely affecting the city, traffic was gridlocked on the Northern Marmara Motorway in the direction of Riva as a result of accumulated water overflowing onto the road.

Heavy downpour that has continued unabated since the morning hours in Istanbul continues to negatively affect life throughout the city. While roads in many parts of both the Anatolian and European Sides were almost submerged due to the intense rain, traffic on main arteries came to a standstill in places.

ACCUMULATED WATER ON THE NORTHERN MARMARA MOTORWAY OVERFLOWED ONTO THE ROAD

One of the areas where the rainfall caused the most problems was the Riva direction of the Northern Marmara Motorway. The sudden overflow of water accumulated on the high slopes in the region onto the road, along with the mud and stone deposits it carried, virtually paralyzed transportation. On the motorway, where the water flowing down the slopes resembled a waterfall, drivers had great difficulty making progress.

TRAFFIC WAS GRIDLOCKED, TEAMS WERE MOBILIZED IN THE FIELD

In the gridlocked traffic caused by accumulated water overflowing onto the road, moments when vehicles advanced inch by inch were captured second by second on mobile phone cameras. Highway and municipal teams dispatched to the scene following reports, despite adverse weather conditions, went into the field in their fluorescent vests and launched an intensive effort to drain the overflowing water and clear the accumulations.
