Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi announced that an agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Finance on a regulation that will transition police personnel to a 12/36 working hour system and ensure overtime pay from 2027 onward. Çiftçi also announced that a special housing project will be initiated for police officers serving in Istanbul.

Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi came together with representatives of media organizations at the Istanbul Press Meeting held at Tersane Istanbul and made statements on the current agenda.

AGREEMENT WITH THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE COMPLETE: 12/36 SHIFT SYSTEM TO BE IMPLEMENTED

Minister Çiftçi announced that an agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance regarding the 12/36 system, aimed at improving the balance between work and social life for police officers, and overtime pay. Çiftçi stated, "We have moved the graduation of our 10,000 candidates from police schools forward by two months. We evaluate that with this fresh blood, we can transition to the 12/36 system."

OVERTIME PAY PERIOD BEGINS FROM 2027

Delivering good news on overtime pay, one of the most requested issues by police officers, Minister Çiftçi said, "We have also completed our negotiations with the Ministry of Finance regarding overtime hours. We have agreed that if we transition to the 12/36 system, overtime pay can be made starting from 2027. Of course, we also need to obtain the approval of the Strategy Directorate."

GOOD NEWS OF LODGING FOR POLICE IN ISTANBUL

Çiftçi added, "Regarding rent assistance, I consulted with our Governor of Istanbul. We plan to purchase apartments in Istanbul to be provided as lodging to the Police Organization, and we will start this there first. The issue of salary equalization arises from the fact that the gendarmerie used to be considered military personnel under the General Staff. Although they are now a law enforcement force under the Ministry of Interior alone, legal regulation and significant budget are required for equalization. Considering the budget burdens imposed by the Iran War, we do not find it very logical for this to happen this year."
