After the appointment of a trustee to the Batman Municipality, Co-Chair Gülistan Sönük stated, "We are moving to our municipal building; we do not recognize any unlawful decisions."
The Ministry of Interior appointed Governor Ekrem Canalp as the trustee in place of Batman Municipality Co-Chair Gülistan Sönük. Canalp entered the municipality building in the early hours of the morning, and security measures were taken around the area.
"MUNICIPALITIES BELONG TO THE PEOPLE"
Batman Municipality Co-Chair Gülistan Sönük stated the following in a statement made on her social media account after the trustee decision:
"Our municipality, which we obtained with the highest vote rate across Turkey in the March 31 elections, through the efforts of women, youth, and our people, has been seized this morning without any notification. We do not accept and will not accept this plunder and usurper regime. Municipalities belong to the people."

WHO IS GÜLİSTAN SÖNÜK?
Gülistan Sönük was born in 1993. She completed her high school education in Kozluk and graduated from the Department of Political Science and International Relations in 2018. She was elected as Co-Chair of Bekirhan Municipality in 2019. According to the official results of the local elections on March 31, 2024, she was elected as Co-Chair of Batman Municipality with 64.52% of the votes.
