Syrian Maryam Al Muhammad, who went to the market in Adana, had her wallet containing 400 grams of gold stolen by a thief. She had been carrying it with her because she feared it would be stolen at home. The woman, stating that the gold she had saved over 17 years to build a new home after their house was destroyed in the war in Syria was stolen, asked for help in tears. Police teams began examining security camera footage to catch the suspect.

A Syrian woman who went shopping at a market in Adana had 400 grams of gold she carried with her stolen because she feared it would be taken from home. The woman, who said they had saved the gold over 17 years to build a house in Syria, burst into tears.

AFRAID TO LEAVE IT AT HOME, HAD IT STOLEN AT THE MARKET

The incident occurred last Sunday evening at a neighborhood market in Sarıçam District, Yüreğir.

Meryem El Muhammed, 37, who fled the civil war in Syria and settled in Adana 17 years ago, accumulated 400 grams of gold with her furniture-maker husband over the years. Planning to return to Syria next month with her family, the woman constantly carried the gold with her for fear it would be stolen at home, as they had saved it to build a new house in place of their war-destroyed home.

HUGGED HER WHILE CHOOSING A WATERMELON AND TOOK HER WALLET

While shopping at the market, a woman approached Meryem El Muhammed as she was selecting a watermelon and allegedly hugged her. During that moment, the suspect took the gold-filled wallet from her bag and quickly fled.

Shortly after, when El Muhammed opened her bag to pay the vendor, she realized the wallet containing the gold was missing and was in shock. The woman reported the incident to the police and filed a complaint.

POLICE ON THE TRAIL OF THE SUSPECT

Upon the report, police teams began investigating and reviewed security camera footage from the area. It was learned that teams are continuing efforts to capture the suspect described by Meryem El Muhammed.

"OUR 17 YEARS OF SAVINGS ARE GONE"

Unable to hold back tears after the incident, Meryem El Muhammed stated that they planned to return to Syria next month and said: "I went to the market for shopping. While choosing a watermelon, a woman came and hugged me. I didn't notice at that moment; she had taken the gold-filled wallet from my bag. That gold was our 17 years of savings. Our house was destroyed in the war in Syria. We were going to go there and build a house. We were to return to Syria next month, but this happened. I carried the gold with me fearing it would be stolen at home, but it got stolen at the market. I want it found as soon as possible."
