Denmark has made a highly discussed decision regarding Greenland, which U.S. President Donald Trump often referred to by saying, "We will add it to our territory." The Danish Parliament has approved a defense agreement that allows the establishment of a U.S. military base in Greenland.

The Danish Parliament approved a defense agreement that paves the way for the United States to establish a military base in Greenland despite tensions regarding the territory.

DANISH PARLIAMENT'S DECISION ON GREENLAND

According to a report by Denmark-based DR, the "Defense Cooperation Agreement" signed between the two countries in 2023 was put to a vote in Parliament before U.S. President Donald Trump took office. The agreement, which was presented for a vote following tensions caused by Trump's desire to "have control" over Greenland, received the approval of a large majority in Parliament despite criticisms.

U.S. TO ESTABLISH MILITARY BASE IN GREENLAND

The agreement, which some members of Parliament criticized as "harmful to the country," allows the U.S. to establish a military base, deploy troops, and maintain military equipment on Danish territory. Before Trump took office, a "Defense Cooperation Agreement" aimed at strengthening national security was signed between the U.S. and Denmark in December 2023.

TRUMP'S STATEMENTS REGARDING GREENLAND

After being elected and taking office, Trump repeatedly stated that Greenland should be under U.S. control, arguing that owning and controlling the island is an "absolute necessity." In March, addressing Congress, Trump said, "Greenland is critical for national security and even global security. We are working with all relevant parties to ensure this. We will obtain it one way or another."

The U.S. President claimed that America's ownership of Greenland is necessary to "defend the free world." Trump's remarks drew reactions from many, especially Greenlandic officials.

The then-Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Bourup Egede, stated, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom." Greenland, one of the two autonomous regions under the Kingdom of Denmark, is located 2,900 kilometers away from Denmark.
