An armed attack was carried out on agricultural workers in the Trujillo region in the north of the country. At the same hours, a police convoy was ambushed in the Omoa region near the Guatemalan border.
STATEMENT FROM THE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
Prosecutor's Office Spokesperson Yuri Mora stated that investigations at the crime scenes are ongoing, saying, “We have teams working at two separate locations. The first team has identified 13 bodies so far, and the second team has recorded the deaths of 6 individuals.”
“THERE IS NO PEACE LEFT HERE”
The leader of a community neighboring the Rigores village where the massacre took place expressed that security has completely vanished in the area, stating, “Gunfire never stops in the surroundings. There is no peace left here anymore. People sleep with one eye open and one eye closed.”
“A HORRIBLE INCIDENT”
Security Minister Gerzon Velasquez stated that the attack was carried out with long-barreled weapons. Describing the event as “horrible,” Velasquez said the region has been under great risk for years due to drug trafficking gangs and conflicts over agricultural lands.
It was noteworthy that the attacks occurred in the week when the Honduran Congress approved new security reforms within the scope of combating organized crime.
