Authorities warned citizens against thieves’ new method in parking lots, in which they wedge 200 TL into vehicle windshield wipers, causing drivers to leave the door open and get out.

A new theft method, frequently encountered recently in shopping mall and supermarket parking lots, has caused great concern among the public. Taking advantage of drivers' absent-mindedness and curiosity, thieves target citizens with the money they wedge into vehicle windshield wipers.

WHEN THE DRIVER GETS OUT TO TAKE THE MONEY...

In this method, thieves wedge attention-grabbing banknotes such as 200 TL between the wipers, causing the driver to get out of the vehicle. Citizens who notice the money on the windshield and get out of the vehicle usually leave the door and ignition open. Thieves watching for this moment quickly approach the vehicle and steal the bag, phone, and valuables on the seat within minutes; sometimes they carjack the running vehicle and disappear.

WARNING FROM AUTHORITIES

Security forces and authorities have warned citizens against this theft method, which has also become quite widespread abroad. It was emphasized that drivers who see a foreign object or money on the wiper or window in parking lots should definitely not get out of the vehicle, and should check the situation after locking the doors and moving to a safe area.
