In Sakarya, severe torrential rain that has continued intermittently for two days caused landslides and flooding. In the Karasu district, stones and soil swept down from the mountain caused damage to houses, while in the Geyve district, a landslide closed the connecting road providing access to two neighborhoods from the D-650 highway.
Heavy torrential rain that has continued intermittently in Sakarya since the previous day negatively affected life in the city's Karasu and Geyve districts. The landslide caused by the rains and the soil and rock fragments carried by water caused damage to some houses and led to the closure of neighborhood roads.
A landslide occurred after the downpour that was effective yesterday in the Karanlıkdere Neighborhood of Karasu district. Due to soil and rock fragments dragged down from the slopes, a partial collapse occurred in one house and the structure became unusable. While the surroundings of 3 more houses affected by the rain were covered with soil and stones carried by water, mud layers formed on the floors of the houses whose ground floors were flooded. Teams from Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality and Karasu Municipality started debris clearing work in the neighborhood.
"WE HAVE STARTED DEBRIS REMOVAL WORK"
Making a statement about the disaster experienced in the neighborhood, Karanlıkdere Neighborhood Headman Yılmaz Koca said they had experienced a major disaster. Stating that the flood brought the stones and soil it dragged from the mountain to the neighborhood, Koca said, "There was a collapse in one of our houses, 4-5 of our houses were flooded. Thank God, we have no loss of life. Our state is with us. We have started debris removal work. May God not harm our state. We will overcome this together, state and nation hand in hand."
Noting that regional landslides and stream overflows occurred as a result of heavy rainfall, Koca reported that citizens were waiting for help regarding the damaged houses.
ROAD PROVIDING ACCESS TO 2 NEIGHBORHOODS CLOSED
Heavy rains also caused disruptions in transportation in Geyve district. Due to the landslide that occurred at the Doğançay location of the Sakarya-Bilecik highway, the connecting road providing access to Doğançay and Maksudiye neighborhoods from the Bilecik direction of the D-650 highway was closed to traffic.
As entry to the two neighborhoods from the specified route became impossible due to the landslide, security and response teams were dispatched to the area upon notification. While gendarmerie teams took security measures in the area, teams from Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, SASKİ, and the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) continue their work to reopen the road to traffic using work machines.
