US President Donald Trump delivered strong anti-communist messages in his speech at the country's 250th anniversary celebrations. Saying 'America will never be a communist country,' Trump referred to communism as 'cancer' while calling for the passage of the SAVE America Act regarding election security. The speech was delayed due to a storm, and the celebrations ended with a fireworks display.
US President Donald Trump addressed tens of thousands of people at celebrations in Washington marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. In his speech, which started late due to severe weather conditions, Trump praised his country's past while using harsh rhetoric against communism.
"AMERICA WILL NEVER BE A COMMUNIST COUNTRY"
Speaking at the National Mall event attended by approximately 150,000 people, Trump said the US has been the world's "hope, promise, light, and pride" for 250 years.
Arguing that communism poses a threat to the US, Trump stated, "America will never be a communist country. Communism is doomed to lose and always will be."
Trump noted that American soldiers have fought against communism in various parts of the world and said, "We will not allow this threat to re-emerge in America."
"LIKE CANCER, MUST BE QUICKLY CUT OUT"
Trump reiterated the messages from his speech the previous day at Mount Rushmore, comparing communism to "cancer." "Communism is like cancer. It needs to be quickly cut out," Trump said, signaling that he would make this issue a key topic of the midterm election campaign.
CALLED FOR ELECTION LAW
In his speech, Trump also called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require photo identification to vote and citizenship documentation for voter registration.
Additionally, referencing past government actions against him, Trump said, "In this country, there is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and equality before the law. Even though I have not been treated very well..."
SPEECH DELAYED DUE TO STORM
The celebration area was evacuated due to a severe storm, and Trump's speech began about 1 hour and 45 minutes late. The president thanked the waiting crowd, saying, "I would have spoken even at 4:00 AM if necessary. Today is July 4th, it could not be another day."
After the speech, Trump and his wife Melania Trump, along with cabinet members and their families, watched the fireworks display. During the event, over 800,000 fireworks were set off around the Potomac River area.
