The Aegean Sea off the coast of Santorini has been shaking like a cradle for the last 6 days. In the region where 400 earthquakes have occurred, the most recent ones were consecutive tremors measuring 4.8 and 4.3. Following the unsettling quakes that worried the residents, many people left Santorini Island.

The seismic activity in the Aegean Sea continues today. There have been consecutive earthquakes northeast of the tourist island of Santorini in Greece. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the number of tremors recorded during the earthquake storm has exceeded 400. In a statement from AFAD, it was expressed that developments are being closely monitored. The tremors in the region are ongoing.

TWO MORE MAJOR EARTHQUAKES OCCURRED

According to the latest information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a tremor measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded at 11:13, with its epicenter in the Aegean Sea. Following this tremor, an earthquake measuring 4.8 was recorded at 11:38, also with its epicenter in the Aegean Sea.

Later, earthquakes measuring 4.3 occurred at 11:40 and 11:42, two minutes apart. It was determined that all three earthquakes occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

PEOPLE ARE LEAVING SANTORINI

The residents of Santorini Island, where over 400 earthquakes have occurred in the last 6 days, have started to leave the island. Anxiety is increasing in the region, where experts have pointed out volcanic eruption activity.

WILL THE EARTHQUAKES AFFECT TURKEY?

On the other hand, the seismic activity is being closely monitored from Turkey as well. Prof. Dr. Aykut Akgün, the head of the AFAD Earthquake Department, answered the question, "To what extent can the earthquakes affect Turkey?" Akgün stated that the earthquakes in the region are natural.

Akgün expressed that the earthquakes are occurring in a normal position but that they are facing a process outside of normal activity, and he noted:

"According to the current data we have, this can be referred to as an 'earthquake storm.' We are talking about consecutive earthquakes of certain magnitudes that are close to each other. We know that volcanic activity is fresh here. We do not have data indicating that the onset of volcanic activity has caused these earthquakes. If it does, we would not be surprised because the area is one that could develop active volcanism. This could diminish or increase to some extent. It is not possible to say anything definitive. It is important to remain vigilant by continuously observing."
