According to witnesses, flames suddenly erupted from the parked car, and the individual emerged from the vehicle wearing burned clothing, wandering around the square. Firefighters who arrived at the scene extinguished the flames on the person before they were taken to the hospital.
In a shocking incident that took place yesterday in Amsterdam's tourist center, Dam Square, a person believed to have intentionally detonated their own vehicle was seriously injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, flames suddenly erupted from a small red vehicle parked in the square. After the explosion, the individual emerged from the vehicle with their clothes on fire and began to wander around the square.
In footage showing the moment of the incident, which quickly spread on social media, a man can be seen staggering and walking with his clothes ablaze. Moments of nearby citizens fleeing in panic were also captured on camera.
In a statement from the Amsterdam police, it was noted, "Upon reviewing the camera footage, it was determined that the fire originated from an explosion in a crowded area. We suspect that the vehicle owner deliberately caused the fire."
Firefighters who quickly arrived at the scene extinguished the flames on the individual with fire extinguishers, after which they were taken to the hospital by medical personnel. No official statement has yet been made regarding the injured person's health status.
Authorities stated that a pro-Palestinian demonstration was taking place in the square at the time of the incident, but there is currently no evidence linking the two events.
This incident occurred after a knife attack in the same area last week, which left five people injured. It was reported that the perpetrator of the previous attack was a 30-year-old citizen from Ukraine's Donetsk region and acted with terrorist intent.
The police announced that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that a section of the square remains closed for security reasons.
