In the investigation of the electrical accident in Izmir, 6 people, including 2 general managers, were detained.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 6 suspects, including the General Manager of İZSU and the General Manager of Gdz Electricity Distribution, in the criminal investigation regarding the deaths of Özge Ceren Deniz and İnanç Öktemay, who were electrocuted while walking on the street in İzmir.

The investigation conducted by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has seen a new development. In the incident where 14 out of 35 suspects, including the General Manager of IZSU Gürkan Erdoğan and two high-level bureaucrats, were arrested, additional detentions were ordered. A total of 10 people, including Gürkan Erdoğan and two senior bureaucrats, were taken into custody.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In Konak district, on July 12, Deniz and Öktemay lost their lives by getting electrocuted while stepping into a puddle during heavy rain. Out of the 35 suspects who were issued detention orders as part of the investigation, 33 were captured, and 6 were released after their statements. The 27 suspects in custody were later referred to the courthouse after the completion of their procedures at the police station, and 14 of them were arrested.

According to the expert report within the case file, it was determined that 5 more suspects were negligent in the incident, and detention orders were issued for them. It was stated that 3 of them were captured, 1 was undergoing cancer treatment, and 1 was abroad. The 3 captured individuals were later released under judicial control.

WHO IS GÜRKAN ERDOĞAN?

Gürkan Erdoğan was born in Izmir in 1982.

He completed his primary, secondary, high school, and university education in Izmir. He graduated from Ege University in 2006 with a degree in Civil Engineering. In 2012, he obtained a master's degree in planning from Ege University.

He started his professional career by working in the private sector and the Chamber of Civil Engineers between 2006 and 2009. In 2009, he started working as a Civil Engineer at the 2nd Regional Directorate of Highways. He served as the responsible engineer in many projects in the Aegean Region and successfully completed them.

Between 2016 and 2020, he served as the President of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers.

In July 2019, he started working as the Head of Investment and Construction Department at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (IZSU). In October 2020, he was appointed as the Deputy General Manager of IZSU. He has been serving as the General Manager of IZSU since 2024.
