An 18-year-old young man, alleged to have spied on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence in Russia, was detained in an operation conducted by the Russian intelligence service FSB while walking down the street with his girlfriend. It was claimed that the young man passed information to Ukraine about defense industry facilities and security units in Russia in exchange for money.

An 18-year-old wanted in Russia on suspicion of spying on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence was detained by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) officers while walking down the street with his girlfriend. As footage of the operation carried out in broad daylight was shared, it was alleged that the young man passed information to Ukrainian military intelligence about strategic facilities in Russia.

DETAINED WHILE WALKING WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND

The incident occurred in the Republic of Mari El, part of Russia. According to reports published in the Russian press on October 20, FSB officers placed the 18-year-old under surveillance, suspecting him of being connected to Ukrainian intelligence.

In the shared operation footage, the young man was subdued by special operations teams as he walked with his girlfriend. The detained young man was placed in a vehicle and taken for questioning.

ACCUSED OF PASSING INFORMATION TO UKRAINIAN INTELLIGENCE

According to the FSB statement, the young man contacted the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense via the internet.

Russian security agencies claimed that the suspect collected information for money about defense industry facilities and law enforcement premises in the Mari El region and passed this information to the Ukrainian side.

FIRST SABOTAGE, THEN AN ESPIONAGE OFFER

According to information in the Russian press, the young man said in statements during interrogation and court proceedings that his Ukrainian contact initially asked him to carry out sabotage acts such as setting a building or vehicle on fire.

He said that after he rejected this offer, he was given the task of collecting intelligence.

The FSB, however, claimed that the young man contacted Ukrainian military intelligence on his own initiative and offered to provide information in exchange for money.

FACING UP TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON

Russian authorities announced that a criminal investigation had been opened against the detained young man on charges of treason.

It was reported that the 18-year-old suspect, arrested by a court decision, faces up to 20 years in prison under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code.

The espionage accusations against the young man are based on statements by Russian security authorities; there is no information indicating that the claims have been independently verified.
