The U.S. State Department has approved the immediate sale of nearly $1 billion worth of precision-guided missile systems to Israel. Activating a special clause in the Arms Export Control Act, the Trump administration proceeded without awaiting congressional approval. The package also includes the sale of Patriot and air defense systems totaling over $7.5 billion to Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has approved potential weapons sales to Israel and several other Middle Eastern countries.
"IMMEDIATE" WEAPONS SALE TO ISRAEL
In a statement from the US State Department, it was reported that the Department has approved the potential sale of $992.4 million worth of Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) and related equipment to Israel.
The statement indicated that the prime contractor for the sale would be "BAE Systems" located in the US state of New Hampshire.
The statement noted that "an emergency exists" requiring the sale to Israel to be made "immediately," and that for this sale, the congressional review requirements under Section 36(b) of the Arms Export Control Act have been waived.
MORE THAN $7.5 BILLION IN SALES TO QATAR, KUWAIT, AND THE UAE
In another statement from the Department, it was stated that the sale of potential military materiel to Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE has been approved.
The statement said that the Department has approved the sale of equipment related to replenishment services for Patriot Air and Missile Defense systems to Qatar for $4.01 billion, and also approved plans to sell the "APKWS" system to Qatar for $992 million and to the UAE for $147.6 million.
The statement further expressed that the sale of the Integrated Combat Command System to Kuwait for $2.5 billion has been approved.
