"Israel's decision following Palestine's request for a ban from FIFA."

04.10.2024 20:00

FIFA has once again postponed its decision regarding the call from Palestine to ban Israel from international football despite the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The FIFA Council, which had promised to address the issue at the extraordinary council meeting last July, postponed the decision to its meeting on August 31 and then moved it to the meeting in October.

FIFA did not make a sanction decision again at yesterday's meeting where the application for Israel's expulsion from international football was discussed.

DECISION POSTPONED ONCE AGAIN

The FIFA Council postponed its decision regarding the call from Palestine for Israel's expulsion from international football once again, despite the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

PALESTINE HAD REQUESTED A BAN

The Palestinian Football Association announced on October 3 that they expected Israel to be expelled from international football while receiving an independent legal assessment regarding their application to FIFA for Israel's expulsion. FIFA, which promised to address the issue at the extraordinary council meeting last July, postponed the decision to the FIFA Council meeting on August 31 and later moved it to the October meeting.

ISRAEL THREATENED TO WITHDRAW THEIR APPLICATION

PFA, in a written application submitted to FIFA last April, requested the termination of the Israel Football Association's FIFA membership on the grounds that it had not taken necessary steps against human rights violations caused by the attacks carried out by Israel since October 7, as well as discrimination and racism experienced in the Israeli league. In a statement made in May, the President of the Palestinian Youth and Sports High Council, Jibril al-Rujub, said that PFA was threatened by Israeli officials to withdraw their application to FIFA for Israel's expulsion.

AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN INITIATED AGAINST ISRAEL

FIFA announced that the disciplinary committee has been tasked with initiating an investigation against Israel regarding the discrimination allegations put forward by the Palestinian Football Association. In this context, the participation of Israeli football teams, which are claimed to be located in Palestinian territories, in competitions in Israel will also be investigated.

INFANTINO'S CALL FOR PEACE

Regarding the issue, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, "The ongoing violence in the region confirms that we need peace, as also mentioned at the 74th FIFA Congress. In a period where we are extremely shocked by what is happening and our thoughts are with those who are suffering, we call on all parties to immediately restore peace in the region."
