Despite the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement reached in Gaza, Israel announced that it would not release Palestinian leader Marwan al-Barghouti, who has been imprisoned since 2002. Barghouti is among the names that Hamas wants to be released as part of the prisoner exchange agreement.
The Israeli government announced that Palestinian leader Marwan al-Bargusi will not be released as part of the expected ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza.
DESPITE THE CEASEFIRE, ISRAEL WILL NOT RELEASE PALESTINIAN LEADER BARGUSI
Israeli Prime Minister's spokesperson Tal Heinrich made evaluations regarding the agenda during a press conference.
Heinrich stated that the final draft of the agreement, which includes a ceasefire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas, was formulated and signed this morning in Egypt.
Heinrich expressed that after the Israeli Security Cabinet approves the agreement, the Israeli army will withdraw to the designated "adjusted deployment lines," and after this withdrawal, 53% of Gaza will continue to remain under Israeli occupation. Heinrich noted that Bargusi, who is a symbolic figure of Palestinian resistance, will not be released as part of the prisoner exchange.
BARGUSI IS AMONG THE NAMES HAMAS WANTS RELEASED
Bargusi is among the names that Hamas wants to be released as part of the prisoner exchange. Bargusi is considered one of the key actors of the first Intifada, which broke out in 1987. He also played an important role in the second Intifada in 2000 and has been imprisoned in Israel since 2002. Israel had sentenced Bargusi, a member of the Fatah Central Council, to life imprisonment five times and 40 years in prison.
