John Swinney Becomes New Scottish First Minister

07.05.2024 18:27

Swinney replaces Humza Yousaf who stepped down over a week ago.

John Swinney was voted in on Tuesday as Scotland's next first minister in the regional government, replacing Humza Yousaf.

"I hope we can all recognize that despite our political differences, we're all here because we want the best for Scotland, whatever our specific role happens to be," Swinney said in a speech at the Scottish Parliament.

The voting came hours after Yousaf officially resigned as the first minister.

Swinney received the backing of 64 MSPs, while Scottish Conservatives leader Douglas Ross was supported by 31.

Swinney has come into the office as the 7th first minister of the devolution era, just eight days after predecessor Yousaf announced he was stepping down.

The Scottish Greens chose to abstain, signaling that Swinney will now lead a minority government, two seats short from majority in the parliament.

The former deputy first minister of Scotland emerged as the sole contender in the leadership race for a new first minister. -
