On Christmas Day in Mozambique, 6,000 inmates escaped during a prison riot. Among them were prisoners, including terrorists, who managed to escape by seizing the guards' weapons. According to a statement by Mozambique Police Chief Bernardino Rafael, 33 inmates lost their lives and 15 were injured during the clashes that broke out during the escape. The presence of 29 terrorist offenders among the escapees raised concerns. The events that began during the protests of demonstrators gathered in front of the prison in the capital Maputo quickly spiraled out of control. The inmates first seized the guards' weapons and then broke down the prison walls to carry out a mass escape. The escape incident coincided with a period when the political crisis in the country reached its peak. Street protests had begun after the Supreme Court confirmed the victory of the ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo in the controversial elections. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda claimed at a press conference that the events were backed by supporters of opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, who received 24% of the votes in the elections. Ronda stated, "The violent incidents are being carried out in a planned manner." Security forces launched a large-scale operation to capture the escaped inmates. The police called on the civilian population to report any sightings of the escaped prisoners. Authorities gave the escapees a deadline to surrender. Security experts indicate that the simultaneous escape of such a large number of inmates poses a serious risk to national security. The escape of terrorist offenders, in particular, raises concerns about regional stability.
