At least 8 people died and more than 20 were injured when a freight train hit a public bus at a level crossing in Bangkok, Thailand's capital. The bus caught fire, and nearby vehicles were also involved in the accident.
A train accident occurred today in the Makkasan area of Bangkok, Thailand's capital, at around 15:40 local time.
LEVEL CROSSING DISASTER: 8 DEAD
A freight train crossing a level crossing hit a public bus stuck on the tracks due to traffic, resulting in at least 8 deaths and more than 20 injuries.
According to reports in the Thai press, all of the deceased were inside the bus.
CARS AND MOTORCYCLES IN THE VICINITY ALSO INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT
The bus was dragged several meters by the impact, and cars and motorcycles nearby were also involved in the accident. The bus hit by the train quickly caught fire, and numerous fire, medical, and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. The fire, which occasionally caused explosions, was brought under control within about 10 minutes through the intense efforts of the teams.
The area was closed to civilian traffic after the incident, and it was reported that police and relevant authorities are continuing their investigations at the scene.
